How To Properly Season And Care For Carbon Steel Cooking Surface (Smokelis Smash Ring)

Initial Seasoning:
  • Heat the Smash Ring over a lit fire until you see the pre-seasoning layer get glossy and release light smoke. This indicates it's ready for seasoning.
  • Use a scraper or paper towels to wipe off any protective coating, debris, or contaminants on the Smash Ring.
Usage:
  • Place the Smash Ring on the fire only when you're ready to cook. Ensure the fire is already lit. It would be normal to have the fire running hot and enjoying the heat, then as it burns out a little and becomes a better cooking temperature, to place the Smash Ring on then.
  • Enjoy some fabulous non-stick cooking on a natural surface over live fire! Smash burgers, Stir-fry, cedar plank with a whole freshly caught fish, go hot and fast with some rib eye steaks!
  • If you've been using the Smash Ring to cook and have since finished cooking and want to stoke the fire for additional heat, it is normal and expected to leave the Smash Ring on. It's not advised to remove it while hot. And don't refrain from stoking the fire just because you've stopped cooking.

    NOTE:
  • The Smash Ring has a center press, directing fats and oils into the fire while cooking, preventing runoff onto your patio or ground surface.
  • Be mindful not to overheat the Smash Ring with too much fire, as excessive heat can cause the surface to become steep, possibly leading to food sliding into the fire.
  • And avoid cooking with excessive flame also if you are concerned about flare ups from the fat pooling/running off on the inside edge of the Smash Ring
Post-Usage Care:
  • After cooking, let the Smash Ring cool down on the fire until it's safe to touch.
  • While the Smash Ring is still warm (not with flames coming out of the fire), use a scraper or paper towels to clean off any leftover food or excess oil.
Re-Seasoning After Use:
  • While the Smash Ring is cooling on the fire, apply a very thin layer of your preferred cooking oil to the entire surface.
  • Spread the oil evenly using a paper towel. No need to heat it again; the residual heat will help form an even protective seasoning layer.
Storage:
  • Store the Smash Ring in a dry place to prevent rust. If it's humid, you can apply a very thin layer of oil before storing.
  • Storing the Smash Ring vertically can help maintain its seasoning over time.
Avoid Unnecessary Heating:
  • Only heat the Smash Ring when you plan to cook. Unnecessary heating without cooking may burn off the seasoning and require re-seasoning.
